The LFS Screening Room

The MA Filmmaking Programme involves work on five programmed film exercises and a graduation film over two years. In this screening room, we feature recent examples of these strictly-controlled exercises in the order in which they appear in the course, starting with the most basic, mute 16mm projects.

A TRIP TO THE COAST - First Term Film Exercise

Synopsis: People on a trip to the coast on a bleak winters day pretend they are enjoying themselves.

Film Excercise Details: A 16mm mute black and white exercise made by a unit of three students, shot on exterior locations, with 400ft of film stock. Shooting schedule 3 days and post production 8 days.

BUSINESS OR PLEASURE - Second Term Film Exercise

Synopsis: Two men wake up in a bedroom and they are not sure what happened between them!

Film Excercise Details: A 16mm colour exercise with non-synchronous sound made by a unit of six students, each one directing their own project on a rotating basis. Shot on interior and/or exterior locations with 200ft of film stock and 600ft of magnetic stock. Shooting schedule 1 day, post production 5 days over a 22 day period and dubbing time 20 minutes.

KEEPING TIME - Third Term Documentary Film Exercise

Synopsis: "KEEPING TIME" is the story of Helen, a 75 year old English widow who loves to dance. After the death of her beloved husband Helen found Bill, from Barbados, a self-proclaimed master of Jive. Together, this unlikely couple has been dazzling the London tea-dancing scene for the past 15 years.

Film Excercise Details: A 16mm colour documentary exercise, shot on film or DV with synchronous sound made by a unit of six students, each one having a specific responsibility within the unit. Shot on interior and/or exterior locations, with 2000ft of film stock and 2400ft of magnetic stock. Shooting schedule 6 days, post production 27 days and dubbing time of 2 hours.

LACE - Fourth Term Film Exercise

Synopsis: Marion, now grown up, lives with her oppressive Mum. For Mother's birthday Marion wants to surprise her with a new dressing gown. In a lingerie shop, Marion has a minor accident and she ends up buying some tiny but sexy underwear. Marion believes this to be a nice gift for her Mother. As it turns out, Mother doesn't! Marion thinks that the lingerie is the most gorgeous thing she has ever seen and in a quiet revolt, she claims the lingerie for herself.

Film Excercise Details: A 35mm black and white studio exercise with synchronous sound made by a unit of six students, each one having a specific responsibility within the unit. Shot on sets constructed by the students with the possible addition of exterior sequences, using 2800ft of film stock and digital sound recording. Shooting schedule 5 days studio including rehearsal and 2 days locations, post production on Avid Film Composer 21 days and dubbing time of 2 hours.

LIFE DEATH & STUFF
LIFE DEATH & STUFF - Fifth Term Film Exercise

Synopsis: A teenager lies hurt outside a house party. As someone goes inside to try and find the boy's girlfriend, we follow the stories of some of the other people in the house

Film Excercise Details: A 35mm colour studio exercise with synchronous sound made by a unit of six students, each one having a specific responsibility within the unit. Shot on sets constructed by the students with the possible addition of exterior sequences, using 3600ft of film stock and digital sound recording. Shooting schedule 5 days studio including rehearsal and 2 days location. Post Production on Avid Film Composer and Protools Audio Workstation 21 days. Dolby SR mix, and dubbing time of 4 hours.
