Composing Music For Film.
A practical one year course - Part time

September 2008

Introduction

This is a practical one year course which runs one evening a week at the London Film School.

The course offers a media/picture orientated musical approach rather than a formal/academic approach focusing on music as a tool to help tell the story as it unfolds on the screen.

As different composers have different strengths and weaknesses the aim of the course is to help students to develop their strengths without putting undue pressure on them to achieve a high standard in subjects which may not be of interest. However, by covering a large variety of areas the students will have a working knowledge of the various aspects involved in composing for film and television.

In addition to the evening seminars, students are encouraged to attend the Wednesday morning film lectures open to all LFS film students. This is a great way to meet the other film makers and will also provide an invaluable insight into how music works with picture.

Further specialist teaching is provided by visiting lectures and extra recording sessions will be organised during weekends (dates in agreement with the students).

Requirements for the course

As you will be working with postgraduate filmmakers a good knowledge of music is required. A first degree in a music related subject is preferable, but practical experience is equally valid. You will need some understanding of basic music technology, harmony/counterpoint and compositional technique.
