Introduction

The intricacies of the ‘Digital Workflow’ can be incredibly complicated and daunting for filmmakers. The process impacts on numerous departments, including camera, sound, editing, visual effects, production management, post production and others. If the capture medium is digital, how exactly do you get to the finished movie? If you don't understand what happens where and when and why, how do you plan it, schedule it, budget it and control it?

Aimed at film professionals working in all departments, this 2-day course provides a comprehensive overview of what to expect from and how to work within an all-digital workflow. Cutting through increasingly technical terminology, our experts will guide participants through digital production from pre-production to final delivery.

Course Outline

Please note: The following details refer to the most recent workshop we offered in January 2011. Certain aspects of the programme (including guests and case studies) may be subject to change.

Rather than concentrating on ever-changing new cameras and their settings, this course is about creating clarity for those involved in production. During these two days we will examine a wide variety of issues which frequently arise from working in a digital workflow. We will tackle technical, logistical and creative issues, including:

  • The implications of shooting on different formats, each with their own specific workflow.
  • Who is in charge of the workflow and the necessity of a consistent chain of knowledge in the technical aspects of the digital workflow?
  • How does it change the work of the camera department?
  • The use of different naming conventions in capturing and storing image data.
  • The emergence of the DIT without formal training, new terminology which not everybody understands.
  • The different deliverables for TV/film/web based output etc.

The aim of this course is to draw out best practices and create reference points for people in all departments who work within a digital workflow.

In-depth case studies will provide a context for what has been learned. Confirmed case studies include STREETDANCE 3D (Dir. Max Giwa & Dania Pasquini, 2010), and 127 HOURS (dir. Danny Boyle, 2010).

The course has been developed in collaboration with VET and is moderated by its MD Joan Leese. A keynote speech will be delivered by Claudia Meglin. A course of this nature cannot ignore the specific challenges that a 3D production presents, and as a result various experts will be on hand throughout the two days to take the discussion into the 3rd dimension.
