Introduction

How does a piece of music get into a film? What are the considerations for using pre-existing tracks versus specially commissioned scores? How do you find the right track, the right composer? How much does it all cost and what steps are necessary to ensure it’s all done legally?

In this intensive 1-day workshop, leading UK Music Supervisor & Record Company Executive Ian Neil and expert industry guests explore the complexities of placing music onto film. The course is open to all filmmakers, with particular relevance to producers, directors and post production, as well as media lawyers and music composers.

Course Outline

Topics covered include:

  • Film composers
  • Soundtracks
  • How to get the right piece of music for the right price
  • Budgeting
  • Pitfalls to avoid
  • Rights ownership and how to potentially own your own music rights from your film
  • How a director and producer work creatively with composers, music supervisors and music editors
  • Music publishing
  • Master recording

The programme will include a chaired panel discussion with industry guests. The team will discuss various publishing rights issues, as well as how best to structure the deal for the composer and the producer, and what role the music publisher plays within this process.

We will end the day with networking drinks at LFS.
