Making Waves Berlin 2012
Emerging Strategies in Film Distribution & Marketing
12-18 February at the dffb
Making Waves is a brand new one week distribution and marketing workshop devised by the London Film School in partnership with La fémis, the dffb, ESCAC Barcelona and the Romanian Film and Theatre University funded through the EU Media Programme.
How does a film find its audience? How does an individual title in a particular territory call for a prescription of marketing, from sales agents through festivals, to cinema distribution, VOD and cable, dvd and online publishing. How are distribution companies structured to bring together expertise in all these areas? How are deals made and structured? Separating the myths from the current market realities, Making Waves will immerse students in the independent film market place, exploring the challenges of marketing a film at an international market. Mixing European experience and the US indie scene, the workshop takes a first-hand fresh look at this fast-changing industry.
Running parallel to the Berlinale, from 13-17 February 2012. 25 participants from the 5 training institutions will be immersed in all areas of the festival: the European Film Market, the festival’s official and sidebar sections and the Talent Campus, working collaboratively in teams to develop creative campaigns, edit trailers, design posters and plan roll-out packages for actual independent films showing in the European Film Market. They will be joined by working industry professionals from across the independent distribution sector who will offer project support and in-depth case studies.
Industry trainers include, Christine Vachon, Ben Gibson, Jan Schuette, Tudor Giurgiu, Philippe Bober, Sarah Calderon, Clare Binns, Jean des Forets, Cedric Behrel, Kate Gerova, Olimpia Pont Chafer, Eric Vincente, Lucian Georgescu, Shaun Farrington, Louisa Dent, Charles McDonald, Mike Leedham and Thomas Rosso.
Participants will be grouped into multi-national teams to create distribution companies and sales companies, assigned roles and given an existing film to work on. The training will combine ‘missions’ into the Berlinale and bespoke sessions with practioners in the various specialist departments of independent film distribution.
This hands-on workshop is for graduating students to gain understanding in emerging strategies in independent film distribution, and especially aimed at those planning careers in production, distribution and sales.
